The family of Madeline R. Roy Young, age 93, of Arnold, joyfully announce that on Friday, October 9, 2015, as thunder and lightning filled the evening skies, she and her soul returned to her true environment with God and all the loved ones that went on before.

Viewing will be at Barranco & Sons Funeral Home, Severna Park, from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, October 15, 2015. A celebration of her life will be held at 10 a.m. on October 17, 2015, at Asbury United Methodist Church, Arnold. Internment will be at Arlington National Cemetery, along side her loving husband, John, at a later date.

She was born April 19, 1922, in Cliffside Park, New Jersey, a daughter of the late Theodore Swartzwood Roy and Grace Alvinia Brockner. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, John Joseph Young, one sister, Grace M. Roy Lautenberger, and three brothers, Howard, Clyde & Robert Roy. She was a long-time, active member of Asbury UMC, Arnold.

Madeline’s passion in life was children and she firmly believed that the most valuable legacy we leave behind is our children. She freely shared her gifts as a mother, teacher and mentor. She and her husband were foster parents to 27 children while stationed in Norfolk, VA, in the 1960’s. She taught ESL at Schutz American School in Alexandria, Egypt, while her husband was assigned there in the 1980’s. Madeline was also instrumental in the founding of and was a teacher at Asbury Community Christian Preschool, Arnold (the vision of Mike & Kay Johnson). In her later years, she volunteered as a teaching assistant (kindergarten & first grade) at Windsor Farm Elementary School. Madeline also co-taught The Fisherman’s Class, for developmentally handicapped individuals, at Asbury United Methodist Church, Arnold, with Bruce Meade. Madeline went on many mission trips with her co-partner, Sally Vavrek.

Survivors include 2 sons and daughters-in-law, John R. (Glee) Young, Plant City, Florida, and Christopher E.
