LOVE IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA - 2020

The Schutz Book Club selection to be discussed at the May 2020 Emerald Isle reunion will be Love in the Time of Cholera by Nobel Prize-winning author Gabriel García Márquez. The book is a classic from the master of Latin American literature, but this meaty exploration of the meaning of love engenders controversy as well as praise.

In our discussion, we will explore not only love, but also magical realism, a signature theme of Márquez’s writings. To get a better sense of magical realism, treat yourself to the novel that won the author the Nobel, One Hundred Years of Solitude, the sweeping masterpiece about a Columbian family. The groundbreaking book explores the conflict between the desire for solitude and the need for love, as well as many other themes including history, politics, and the meaning of progress.

For a shorter primer in magical realism, read Márquez’s short stories. Amazon carries the book No One Writes to the Colonel, which includes other short stories by Márquez. Or read The Milagro Beanfield War by John Nichols. Or even quicker, watch the movie versions of Love in the Time of Cholera and/or The Milagro Beanfield War, both in English.

More information and questions about the book club selection will be posted soon.
