DATES AND INFORMATION

Reunion Hosts – Bill and Carolyn Pollock

Friday August 6th – Sunday August 8th, 2021

Mt. Morris / Letchworth Park

Closest Airport is in Rochester NY

It is with great anticipation that we are planning our reunion in this rural area of Western New York where old friendships will be refreshed and new ones engendered.  We are planning a more relaxed schedule to allow time for old fashioned visiting, but you will still have plenty of options. Check out the list of sightseeing choices on this page, and we guarantee that you will want to stay a few extra days to include some of them.

A day trip Saturday to Letchworth State Park (about a half hour from campus) is the main event, although you have many more selections, such as Niagara Falls (about an hour and a half north) to pursue on your own. Letchworth State Park was voted #1 state park in USA Today in 2015, and the Best New York State Attraction in USA Today 2017. Known as the Grand Canyon of the East, the park comprises 14,350 acres and is 17 miles long with steep gorge walls down to the Genesee River, and 3 major waterfalls. There is a $10 per car fee to enter the park but once inside, everything else is free. In addition to hiking trails, there is a museum featuring the life of William Pryor Letchworth, (who donated the land for the park), and other Native American artifacts. The Humphrey Nature Center runs a movie loop with breathtaking scenery taken by a drone throughout all 4 seasons, plus enjoyable activities for children. If you are adventuresome, you could book a rafting trip with Adventure Calls Outfitters (585-343-4710), but that needs to be reserved well in advance. Balloons over Letchworth offers hot air balloon rides in the early morning and evening, but trips are very weather dependent.

Letchworth State Park Lower Falls –

Accommodations are listed on the right.  We have reserved rooms at the Country Inn and Suites in Mt. Morris which is at the north end of Letchworth Park.

Saturday morning before heading off sightseeing, we will take a group photo and that afternoon there will be a tour of Bill and Carolyn’s underground energy efficient home. Come see our millennial scene mosaic floor, air-to-air heat exchanger, heat pump hot water heater, temperature mitigating shades, composting toilet, handmade cabinets, and take a walk on our roof.

Pollock’s Underground House- near the south end of Letchworth Park.

For those wanting to hang out Sunday afternoon, We will try to schedule an Escape Room adventure at Nick of Time Escapes in Swain, NY.

So – let the fun begin and count yourselves a part of it!

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE OF REUNION EVENTS:

Friday the 6th-

Check in at the Country Inn & Suites or other local hotel

Saturday the 7th –

Breakfast – 7:30 am – 8:15 am

Group photo at the hotel

A Picnic lunch will be provided and lunch will be at the Trailside Lodge.

Activity Choices:

** We’ve reserved the Trailside Lodge at Letchworth for the day. Trailside is located next to the nature center. It can be the meeting place for people who would like to have lunch together. And if people are tired from hiking or there is rain for part of the day a good place to find some friends to visit with.

Choice 1: A day trip to Letchworth State Park, (voted by USA Today as best State Park In 2015), and Best Attraction in NYS in 2017. Maps will be provided. The park is 17 miles long. Besides the 3 water falls there is the William Pryor Letchworth Museum, the Humphry Nature Center, The Mary Jemison (white woman of the Genesee) statue and Seneca meeting house, all kinds of hiking trails, and Adventure Calls rafting trip on the Genesee River, which requires reservations quite in advance. This is about 20 minutes from Pollocks’ house. There is a $10 per car entry fee so we suggest car-pooling.

New Railroad Bridge & Middle Falls at Letchworth Park –

Choice 2: Niagara Falls, which is about an hour and a half away. The Maid of the Mist is a nice (short!) ride on the Niagara River, and the Cave of the Winds (no longer a cave), takes you to an area where some of the water cascades on you. Once in Niagara Falls bus tours are available, but again, it would be wise to research in advance. IF the Canadian border is open, there are many tourist attractions, such as a Wax Museum, Ripley’s Believe it or Not Museum, etc. Plenty of tourist shopping everywhere.

Niagara Falls from the Maid of the Mist boat –

Tour of Pollocks’ Underground House

Dinner – 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Sunday the 8th –

Breakfast – 7:30 – 8:15 am

Board Meeting and general meeting including Zoom meeting

Check-out – 11:00

Lunch – 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

For those wanting an extra adventure, We will look into making reservations for the Escape Rooms at Swain Resort (Ski area). This is about 35 minutes from Houghton. These are really fun team building and creative thinking experiences. The cost is around $25 per person.
